Hand-woven in lustrous green velvet, Pattle’s ‘As it is (in heaven),’ imagines geopolitical exchange as a series of floating rocky islands. The Global North and South are the latest in a procession of ever-changing terms used to describe global inequality by demarcating countries according to wealth and opportunity. In Pattle’s hands, these polarities are interlocked in an asymmetrical dialogue, with each domain structurally contingent upon the other. Through ‘As it is (in heaven),’ Pattle interweaves contemporary material and traditional craft practices to blur boundaries of nature and culture. Here, the heavily crafted surface and vivid colour gesture at the constructed nature of foreign dialogues.
